Examination
The pattern of IAS exam has two successive stages- Preliminary Examination and Main Examination. This competitive examination for civil services is being conducted by UPSC (Union Public Service Commission).
Preliminary examination is of intention type which is a qualifying examination, while the main examination includes written examination and interview.
Generally the preliminary examination is held in May-June, while the main exam is held in October/ November. Candidate must start preparing well for the main exam after the preliminary exam because they get little time after that for the main exam.
A candidate is allowed to have four attempts of the test. If a candidate appears in the beginning exam or else even appears for just one paper then also it is counted as an attempt.
Entry to Indian forest service is based on written test which is held in the Jul/ August every year. The test includes two compulsory papers that are of general English and general knowledge. However there are two other subjects also which candidate has to choose from following subjects, except the combinations of subject agriculture and agricultural engineering, chemistry and chemical engineering.

Preliminary Examination Papers:
Paper I: Subject- General Studies (150 marks)
Paper II: Optional Subject (300 marks)
Main Examination Papers:
•Paper I: Any one Indian language which is selected by student (300 Marks)
•Paper II: English (300 marks)
•Paper III: Essay (200 marks)
•Paper IV&V: General Studies (300 marks for each (IV and V))
•Paper VI-IX: Two optional subjects selected by candidate (300 marks each)
Time Limit: 3 hours each paper
